‘Acceptance/ Denial’ a collaboration performance by Zoya Currimbhoy and Maha Minhaj. This piece was first performed at Canvas Gallery, Karachi Pakistan- 2018
What does it mean to live in a postcolonial world? How does the grief/ traumas from our past translated into our modern world? How does a performer express centuries of shared grief? Forming a binary that represents two sides of the coloniser’s history; one confronts via selective amnesia and the other an aggressive acceptance of the guilt of the past. Our characters for this performance originated from ex soldier archetypes. By wearing traditionally male uniforms of British soldiers we (as south asian women) wanted to colonise/ mimic their platform and agency. We wanted to use these characters as proxies to unpack and personalise the residue of our colonial era.
